If you are on the lookout for a GPS watch, the Garmin Fenix 5X is good to consider. When it comes to size, this device easily trumps its siblings like the Fenix 5S. Not only does it appear bulkier, but it also offers more refined features.

Rugged designs are commonly associated with outdoor use. The Garmin Fenix 5X is no different. It can be seen all over the exterior. There’s a lot going on because it has so many details. The screws are noticeable, but they actually blend in well with the whole surface. The bezel looks stylish and has a strong industrial vibe. This makes a perfect choice for those who have big hands. Why? It weighs around 100 grams, pretty heavy if you ask. The device is also water-resistant, so it can be submerged underwater without a problem.

The Garmin Fenix 5X has a high-quality sapphire display. The other models have this as an option, but on the 5x this comes as a standard feature. It means you can take advantage of all the benefits the screen has to offer. It feels resilient, which is important especially for outdoor activities. The screen offers a higher resolution than that on the Fenix 3 HR. It is at 240 x 240. Not only higher, but the colors also pop. Sunlight doesn’t seem to limit its performance as it delivers great visibility on the outside. When it comes to button setup, it doesn’t look too different from the other models. There are 5 navigation buttons around the bezel.

There are a couple of highlights. Firstly, the watch works perfectly anytime, be it in the city or on the trail. You can access all the navigation features to help with the orientation. Secondly, the map data has also been optimized along with round-trip routing. The latter can provide you with suggestions on how to reach certain distances. Another important feature is banners for nearby turns. Additionally, you don’t need to worry about exploring new places because there is a feature called Around Me mode that can provide information about locations that you are unfamiliar with.

There is an option to upload routes if you will. The responsiveness of the map is also incredible as you can load it anytime while running. In order to create a route, you need to choose a start and end location. But if you don’t care much about directions, just switch to the automatic route builder. The device also comes preloaded with a heart rate sensor. The other Fenix watches have this addition as well, so the results are quite similar. Just make sure you wear it properly because the weight makes it move easily and it can affect the readings. (Also read: LG Watch Style, Slim with an Eye-Catching Design)

Depending on the intensity, the battery life can range from a few hours to a few days. For example, if your favorite preference is Smartwatch mode, it can last up to 12 days. But if you use the GPS feature heavily, the battery will run out faster. You probably won’t make it through a whole day because GPS consumes so much power. Thankfully, there is an alternative to make it last longer and that’s called UltraTrac battery saver mode. With this, the device can remain active for like 35 hours. The battery life has always been good ever since the other models were introduced. It’s important for such a device to pack a large battery because we mostly use it outdoors.
